Well its February 8 at The Home Garden and I figured it’s time to start planning our organic vegetable garden for 2010. As you can see from the picture, its completely under snow. This year I think I will add some new vegetables and a few herbs and cut back on some.
Last year we planted so much lettuce and spinach we only ate a third of it. So this year we will have to cut back on lettuce and spinach and space out the plantings a couple of weeks apart, so we can always have young lettuce and spinach. (When they get older they do not taste as good). I think we will also space out plantings for radishes, kohlrabi and green beans.
We love making salsa so we will be planting tomato’s, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, onions and cilantro. We also make sweet and dill pickles so we will be planting cucumbers and dill. We planted rhubarb a few years ago and it is perennial plant so it comes up every year along with asparagus.
A couple of the new things we are planting this year is potato’s and brussels sprouts. We found some great recipes last year for zucchini and we are anxious to try them out. We only plant one plant because they produce so much and grow so terribly fast.
And last we will add a few herbs to our herb garden, basil and chives. I haven’t decided on strawberry’s yet but I think at some point we will put those in as well.
I have a bunch of fruit trees, they are several years old and they don’t produce much fruit so I am going to really concentrate on them this year as far as fertilizing and watering. The first few years I just didn’t do a whole lot with them. Well that’s the plan for 2010, the next step will probably be March or April, getting the soil ready.
